Rice paddy art to promote agricultural tourism in Ilocos Norte

Another rice paddy art crop will be introduced on Thursday (August 18) in front of the administration of the state-run Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) in Batac City in an effort to promote farm tourism and encourage young Ilocanos to pursue modern farming.

Shirley Agrupis, the president of MMSU, stated that a new partnership was formed with the Philippine Rice Research Institute (PhilRice) for the establishment of the rice paddy art using IR 1552, a traditional purple rice variety, and the PSB Rc 82 as green rice, one of the highest yielding rice varieties produced by PhilRice with a maximum yield potential of 12 tons per hectare.

“The ceremonial planting will take place in front of the MMSU administration building at 7:30 a.m.,” she announced as she invited visitors and other guests to attend.

To create the paddy pattern, the planters will employ the anamorphosis principle, a 3D art technique in which a distorted image appears normal when viewed from a specific angle.

As a tribute to one of Batac’s heroic leaders, this year’s paddy art project will feature the image of Artemio Ricarte, a Filipino general known as the Father of the Philippine Army during the Philippine Revolution whose national shrine is still well-maintained in the heart of Batac’s downtown.

In the past, the rice paddy art of MMSU and PhilRice also depicted former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the university’s seven-point agenda “ACHIEVE,” former first lady Imelda Marcos, former MMSU president, and PhilRice executive director Dr. Santiago Obien, and Don Mariano Marcos, after whom the university is named.

According to Agrupis, the university will continue its rice paddy art to promote food security and honor farmers and young people.
