PH durians pass inspection; China anticipates a licence for imports in 2022
The Chinese Embassy in Manila announced on Wednesday that China is likely to provide licenses for the shipment of durian fruits from Davao to China this year.
This came after a group of specialists hired by the Embassy finished researching market access in the area.
Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian announced in a statement that “fresh durian from the Philippines would soon be accessible in the Chinese market, according to the findings of an assessment done by a team of experts established by the Chinese Embassy recently.”
He continued, “It is anticipated that fresh durian from Davao will be allowed for import into China as early as this year.”
A risk evaluation of the area’s orchard harvesting, fruit packaging, insect monitoring, chemical control, Covid-19 prevention, and traceability system was “effectively performed,” according to Huang.
China, a significant consumer of durians, imported fruits worth at least 822,000 tons at USD4.21 billion in 2021, an increase of 82.4 percent over the previous year.
“The durian grown in Davao is of excellent quality and flavor. It is anticipated that it would win over Chinese durian aficionados, “said Huang.
He continued, “As one of the most lucrative agricultural products, the entry of high-quality fresh durian from the Philippines into China with a population of 1.4 billion will benefit hundreds of thousands of Philippine fruit farmers and significantly boost the income of local growers in the Mindanao region.
Huang anticipates that more fruits and agricultural items will be imported from the Philippines as commercial links between the two countries develop.
