To overcome the electricity shortfall, “waste-to-energy” technology is promoted.

On Wednesday, Senator Raffy Tulfo pressed for the complete adoption of waste-to-energy technology to remedy the current electricity crisis.

The complete application of the technology under Republic Act 9513 or the Renewable Act of 2008 will address waste disposal issues, according to Tulfo, the chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, which held a hearing on the topic.

In response, Assistant Secretary Mario Marasigan of the Department of Energy (DOE) stated that the technique is actually being used in Payatas, Quezon City, where garbage is burned, and gas is produced that is currently used as fuel.

According to Marasigan, the local government units (LGUs), who will choose a specific location to be used for the carbonization process, must support the project.

“It was previously put into place in Payatas, Quezon City, but we still need the help of the LGU. Since direct burning is not permitted under the Clean Air Act, dapat ang LGU ang pagtukoy ng specified location and malaking tulong ito for garbage disposal. The Clean Air Act prohibits direct waste burning, so we are not allowed to do so. To properly dispose of the rubbish, the LGU must identify the location, Marasigan informed the panel.

He said that the DOE also looks at tidal, wave, and ocean energy as additional alternative energy sources.

Marasigan received a guarantee from Tulfo that his committee would back the DOE project.
