Filipinos with jobs increased by 478K in August: PSA

Dennis Mapa, the nation’s chief statistician and civil registrar general reported on Thursday that the number of employed Filipinos climbed by 478,000 from the 47.39 million estimated in July this year to 47.87 million in August 2022.

He claimed that the 47.87 million employed people represent a 3.64 million increase over August 2021.

However, the employment rate in August 2022, which was 94.7 percent, was better than the 91.9 percent recorded in August 2021 but was somewhat down from 94.8 percent in July 2022.

According to the Labor Force Survey Results for August 2022 (LFPR) released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), 50.55 million people were working in the Philippines in August, which is 2.44 million more than the August 2021 statistics and 557,000 more than in July 2022.

In contrast, the number of unemployed Filipinos increased to 2.68 million in August 2022, up 79,000 from 2.60 million in July 2022.

According to Mapa, the concurrent rise in employed and unemployed Filipino populations can be attributed to the higher labor force participation rate during the same period.

In August, 76.2 percent of Filipino men and 55.9 percent of women were in the labor force.

“While the majority of the population is employed, there are some who are unemployed. Many people are entering the job force for the first time who are unemployed. The age groups that make up this age group are 15โ€“24 and 24-35. The age range for this is 15 to 24. 79,000 people are classified as unemployed, but on the other hand, 478,000 people are classified as employed (most of them found work, but some are still unemployed). Most unemployed people are new to the workforce. The typical age ranges are 15โ€“24 and 24โ€“35. However, most of them are in the 25โ€“24 age range. There are 79,000 more unemployed people, but on the plus side, 478,000 more people are now employed,” Mapa stated during a press conference.

Along with the employed and unemployed, the number of underemployed Filipinos also climbed, rising by 488,000 from 6.54 million in July 2022 to 7.03 million or 14.7 percent of the population.

With 28.68 million or 59.9% of all employed Filipinos, the services sector continues to dominate the other sectors, followed by the industry sector with 8.37 million (17.5%) and the agriculture sector with 10.82 million (22.6 percent).

The wholesale and retail trade and the repair of cars and motorcycles topped the list of subsectors in the August 2022 LFPR, employing 11.04 million Filipinos, up 378,000 from the 10.67 million in July 2022. This was followed by transportation and storage, with 3.41 million, and manufacturing, with 3.67 million.

While employment in construction decreased by 81,000, fisheries and aquaculture had a reduction of 124,000, and agriculture and forestry decreased by 140,000.

According to Mapa, the primary cause of the decline is the increased cost of diesel, one of these sectors’ essential demands, particularly for farmers and fishermen.

“Dalawa yung nakikita namin dito, of course, yung weather; nevertheless, as for the other, it was the pagtaas of the diesel presyo. So, the two things that have been recognized as causes are weather, obviously, and other things that the increase in diesel prices has impacted. So these truly impact their way of life),” he remarked.
