DTI will focus its attention on harmful instant noodles.
Everything that will ensure the welfare of consumers is covered under the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) responsibility, from examining unhealthful instant noodles to encouraging English proficiency in the workplace.
Senator Raffy Tulfo requested the DTI to assist other government agencies in ensuring that food goods marketed to the general public are safe, such as instant noodle products with high sodium content. This was at the budget hearing on Monday.
Tulfo instructed DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual, “I-refer ninyo po. Maging concerned din po kayo kahit na ‘di po responsibilidad ninyo (Refer it. Be concerned even if it is not your responsibility).”
Pascual said he would contact the Department of Health about the situation (DOH).
The DOH and Department of Agriculture are required to evaluate the danger of food and agricultural goods available on the market, according to Republic Act (RA) 10611, often known as the Food Safety Act.
According to experts, quick noodles are often high in fat, carbs, and sodium but low in calories, fiber, protein, and micronutrients.
Health experts have warned that regular intake is linked to obesity, digestive issues, heart disease, diabetes, and stroke.
Senator Pia Cayetano questioned Pascual on the opinions of foreign investors, particularly in the business process outsourcing sector, regarding the English language competency of Filipinos after the DTI’s budget presentation.
According to Cayetano, data from 2013 to 2020 showed a continuous decline in Filipinos’ English competence.
Pascual said that the DTI had noticed the downturn among young people.
It’s our edge, and we need to fully utilize and truly expand that advantage further. “If you ask us what we’re doing, we’re reminding and alerting our educational institutions of the expectations of the international investors concerning the English proficiency of our workforce.”
The DTI requested PHP18.149 billion in funding, but only PHP8.442 billion was authorized as part of the 2023 National Expenditure Program.
Senator Mark Villar, chair of the finance subcommittee, assured that the DTI and its connected agencies would have a production budget for 2023 to successfully carry out the administration’s major objectives.
As we start this new administration, Villar expressed his optimism that the DTI and its affiliated agencies will successfully implement their plans.
