Reaffirmation of ties between the Philippines and Japan

On Saturday, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties between their nations.

Based on a statement from Undersecretary Cheloy Garafil, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Press Secretary, this came about after Marcos and Kishida had a brief meeting outside of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Plus Three Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia (OPS).

This is Kishida and Marcos’ second in-person encounter.

The two presidents had a private discussion in September of this year while attending the 77th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City.

According to Garafil, Kishida was “extremely thrilled” to speak with Marcos in September and described the conversation as “quite rich and thorough.”

In response, Marcos asserted that the Philippines and Japan can accomplish anything “as long as they are united,” Garafil continued.

As quoted by the OPS, Marcos said to Kishida, “We are continuing to develop all of the concepts that we first started to discuss when we were in New York so that when the time comes this concept that you have introduced to us on economic stability is somethingโ€ฆ that ASEAN, the Philippines โ€” we will continue to develop more of these ideas and concepts.

Garafil stated that although no date has been scheduled for Marcos’ potential state visit, Kishida is looking forward to meeting him in Japan.

Marcos and Kishida decided to strengthen bilateral collaboration between the Philippines and Japan to solve security and economic issues during their initial meeting in New York City in September.

The priorities of Marcos’ administration to develop the infrastructure, cybersecurity, energy, and agricultural sectors were also highlighted to Kishida.

Japan has been the nation’s partner in a number of areas, including infrastructure development, Covid-19 response, and disaster management.

In his most recent meeting with Marcos, Kishida also stated his intention to increase Japan’s cooperation with ASEAN in a number of areas.

“The 50th anniversary of friendship and collaboration between Japan and ASEAN will occur the following year. And I look forward to strengthening our partnership with ASEAN,” Kishida told Marcos.
