Weather data will be updated by BMKG to support the 2023 ASEAN Summit

According to BMKG Head Dwikorita Karnawati, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) wants to regularly update information about the weather, climate, and earthquakes to promote the success of the 2023 ASEAN Summit.

In particular, she noted in a statement released on Sunday, “BMKG also provides strategic weather information to support the safety of transportation for ASEAN’s head of state and all country delegations that attend in Indonesia.”

The BMKG will install a variety of instruments to track and quickly identify any potential earthquake or tsunami activity.

During the entire ASEAN Summit, it will also install an early warning system to identify potential forest and land fires, extreme weather, extreme wave, and potential tsunami.

With assistance from the central system, 14 BMKG stations will also be prepared throughout the entire East Nusa Tenggara Province.

The BMKG will also prepare 190 more BMKG stations in addition to 40 radars dispersed throughout Indonesia so that the data and information obtained would be quicker and more precise.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), the military/police, and the local/regional government will all work together with the BMKG to achieve this goal.

This work is being done to get ready for potential natural calamities like earthquakes and tsunamis.

“Emergency response activity will be preceded by Tactical Floor Game,” she said. “Labuan Bajo itself is a tsunami-prone region and the ASEAN Summit is organized on the seafront and near the waters.”

Karnawati said that the agency is able to get involved in matters linked to environment rescue and preservation given the relatively crucial role that BMKG plays within ASEAN, particularly in regard to the aspects of weather, climate, earthquake, and tsunami early detection system.

She anticipates that the BMKG will be able to play a more strategic role in ASEAN to serve the region’s citizens more broadly.

From May 9 to May 11, 2023, the 42nd ASEAN Summit will take place in Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara.
