Between January and November 13 of this year, fewer crimes were reported throughout the nation than during the same period last year.

Col. Jean Fajardo, a spokesman for the Philippine National Police (PNP), stated that the police force has so far recorded 34,050 index crimes, or crimes against persons, such as murder, homicide, bodily harm, and rape; and crimes against property, such as robbery, theft, and the theft of cars and motorcycles.

“From January through November 13 of the previous year, the same period, we recorded 34,982 (index crimes). Thus, there has been a reduction of 932 (cases) for this year, or a 2.66 percent decline, Fajardo told reporters in an interview on Tuesday in Camp Crame, Quezon City.

She attributed the decline to increased police activities and presence, particularly in places where people frequently congregate, and she also thanked the public for their cooperation.

“They already understand the need for personal safety. This is a significant reason why there have been fewer (criminal) incidences this year, according to Fajardo.

She said that they want to maintain these gains during the holiday season when crime incidences rise along with increased economic activity and travel.
