DOH guarantees employment for RITM staff in the proposed CDC

The Research Institute for Tropical Medicine (RITM) staff has been told by the Department of Health (DOH) that they won’t lose their jobs once the bill establishing the Center for Disease Control is signed into law.

In a media briefing on Friday, DOH officer-in-charge Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire remarked, “We assure our workers in RITM, nobody will lose their work, everybody will be absorbed based on the capacity of each of our personnel in RITM.”

Vergeire made the remark in response to rumors that RITM would be terminated and a large portion of its staff would be laid off.

“That statement is untrue. As a matter of fact, we’re going to further strengthen the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine by incorporating it into our current Centers for Disease Control, which will have additional resources, support, and expertise to help us with the various responsibilities we have at hand, she said.

While the clinical research units, hospital ancillary services, and research laboratory operations will be incorporated under the Center for Health Evidence, the national reference laboratories of RITM will be incorporated under the functions of the Center for Health Laboratories.

Additionally, the Center for Health Evidence will temporarily take over the manufacturing and research activities related to biological products.

Just so everyone is aware, RITM even wrote the Department of Health and the parliamentarians, stating explicitly in their letter that they fully support the creation of the CDC and that it is a national public health organization into which RITM will be absorbed.

When the pandemic was at its worst, the government heavily depended on RITM’s services for Covid-19 testing.

The establishment of the CDC through Senate Bill No. 2505, also known as the Philippine Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Act, which will create the Centers for Health Statistics, Surveillance and Epidemiology, Health Evidence, and Reference Laboratories, is part of the DOH’s strategy to end the pandemic and guarantee access to healthcare for all.
