Marcos urges greater public-private partnerships in the healthcare sector

In order to increase access to higher-quality healthcare services across the nation, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. stated on Thursday that he wanted to see more public-private partnerships in the healthcare industry.

Marcos stated that a public-private partnership along with strong third-party assessments will “address efficiency concerns in dealing with the health needs of Filipinos” in a meeting with leaders of the PSAC’s healthcare cluster at Malacanang Palace.

Additionally, he gave the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) instructions to evaluate “best practices” for enhancing health insurance operations and providing health benefits through digitalization projects.

The DOH started its first project in 2019 with a public-private collaboration that intends to improve the application of the Universal Health Care (UHC) Law.

Encourage nurses to remain

In the meantime, Marcos reaffirmed his appeal for strategies to persuade Filipino nurses and other medical experts to remain in the nation.

“You cannot prevent individuals from achieving a better life and futureโ€ฆ It’s just of you to offer scholarships. All we need to do is figure out how to keep them here, he continued.

He had previously backed a plan to put in place a “ladderized” program to deal with the nation’s “brain drain” of nurses.

A ladderized curriculum enables students to complete a brief course, find employment, and then come back to complete a more challenging course or get a college degree.

The New Philippine Nursing Practice Act, which seeks to implement reforms to further safeguard and advance the nursing profession in the nation, was also supported by Marcos.

OIC for the Department of Health (DOH) The government is searching for “bilateral partners,” according to undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire, to offer scholarship programs for medical professionals and students.

As part of these negotiations, Vergeire stated, “we will have exchange programs or exchange conditions with our bilateral ties.”

She claimed that improving scholarship programs for Filipino healthcare professionals is essential to resolving issues with the workforce.
