On Wednesday (Brussels time), President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. hailed recent successes by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the European Union (EU) blocs, noting them as evidence of both blocs’ “active” cooperation in the post-pandemic recovery.

He said this in a speech while serving as Belgium’s country coordinator for the 10th ASEAN-EU Commemorative Summit.

He listed the acceptance of the plan of action to carry out the ASEAN-EU Strategic Partnership for 2023–2027 as one of these achievements last August.

In accordance with this strategy, ASEAN and the EU will work together while upholding the local rules, regulations, and policies of each member state as well as the commitments that each member state has under international law.

Additionally, Marcos mentioned the October signing of the ASEAN-EU Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement (CATA).

The ASEAN-EU CATA is the first bloc-to-bloc air transport agreement in history and it represents current regulatory policy.

Both achievements, according to him, represent “clear promises from both sides, an active partnership for our region’s post-Covid economic recovery.”

In addition, Marcos expressed delight in the Philippines’ function as the coordinator for ASEAN-EU dialogue ties as the two organizations celebrate 45 years of steadfast cooperation.

As “we map new roads to further expand our alliance,” he thanked all of the ASEAN and EU members for their assistance and cooperation.

In his words, “We are stronger together than we are alone. As coordinator of our relations from 2022 to 2024, I promise you the Philippines’ continuous efforts to foster robust and dynamic connections between our areas.

Since 2021, the Philippines has served as the ASEAN-EU country coordinator, and it will continue to do so through 2024.

The 10th ASEAN-EU Business Summit intends to rekindle Europe’s interest in Southeast Asia as a region of opportunity while also strengthening the two sides’ already solid trade and investment connections.
