The second week of installation sees fewer issues with SIM registration: DICT
In the second week of deployment, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) saw a nearly 50% decrease in the average number of complaints over the subscriber identification module (SIM) registration procedure.
The decline in complaints despite the ongoing increase in registered SIM card numbers was noted by DICT Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo during a press briefing on Tuesday at the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) in Quezon City.
The number of complaints has drastically decreased from an average of 95 complaints during the first week to an average of 47 complaints during the second week, according to Lamentillo, who noted that as of January 9, there were already more than 16 million SIMs registered.
The public’s direct point of contact with the DICT for questions regarding information and communications technology (ICT), including SIM registration, is the 24/7 Complaint Center Hotline 1326 of the DICT.
“The majority of the worries related to SIM registration, website loading issues, and registration locations. There are also questions regarding the number of SIMs customers can register, the registration deadline, what to do if they enter the wrong information, and worries about data privacy, she added.
She claimed that on December 27, 2022, the SIM registration program and complaint center were both introduced.
“Having this Complaint Center gives the DICT and our attached agencies a clear picture of the public’s concerns so we can communicate them to our PTEs (private telecommunications entities), and we are aware if there is already a need to intervene to ensure that we give end-users an effective way to register their SIMs,” she said.
She mentioned that in addition to SIM registration, the public might contact the DICT by calling the hotline for any ICT-related issues.
16,566,103 SIM cards, or roughly 9.80 percent of all active SIM cards in the nation in September 2022, have been registered to date.
Out of the three PTEs, Smart has 7,751,502 registered SIM cards or 11.40 percent of its active subscribers overall. DITO is second with 1,468,722 registered SIM cards, or 11.20 percent, and Globe is third with 7,345,879, or 8.36 percent.
“At least 1 million SIMs should be registered each day is our goal. We are on track right now, but there might be a lull before a rush as the deadline draws closer,” she said.
She said that the DICT uses both the SIM registration program and hotline 136 as instruments to combat cybercrimes like human trafficking, online sexual abuse, and child exploitation as well as to assist prevent mobile and online fraud.
“The SIM registration is our defense against phony calls, text message scams, and even mobile app scams. It is crucial that we register all SIMs as soon as possible because of this, she stated.
