DENR: Potential sinking oil tanker location discovered
On Monday, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) announced the discovery of a potential location where the oil tanker MT Princess Empress went down last week.
“We are happy to report that, thanks to the work of BRP Hydrographer Ventura, we believe we may have found the location of the vessel. It stated in a statement that the location was 400 meters or around 1,200 feet below sea level.
According to the DENR, the oil tanker is northeast of the town of Pola in the province of Oriental Mindoro, but it’s thought to have drifted southeast from where it was last seen, entirely submerged.
However, the DENR stated that should the currents and weather permitting, it will demand verification in the form of the deployment of a remotely-operated vehicle (ROV) that enables total visualization.
The statement said, “We are now planning to access an ROV in order to fully ascertain where the vessel actually is and to completely simulate the manner in which the oil will be pouring from the vessel.
When the analysis was made public on Sunday night, the DENR quickly informed President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. of the situation.
About the potential use of this information in the modeling for the spread of the oil, it was said that “we are actively cooperating with local government authorities and with UP-MSI (University of the Philippines-Marine Science Institute)”.
The DENR stated that it is eager to share an updated model from UP-MSI with the general public, local governments, and the affected areas.
The MT Princess Empress, which was traveling from Bataan province to Iloilo province, came into engine issues caused by overheating on February 28 and sank off the shore of Naujan town in Oriental Mindoro.
The oil tanker’s 20 crew members were all saved.
