Wind farm to be built by DMCI Power at Semirara Island
On Monday, leading off-grid power producer DMCI Power Corporation (DPC) revealed that Semirara Island, home to the largest coal reserve in the Philippines, would get a wind power facility.
With estimates ranging from eight to twelve megawatts and operational implementation anticipated within 12 to 15 months, the DPC expects to finalize the wind power capacity in the upcoming months.
The company will independently fund and carry out the project.
In a statement, DPC President Antonino Gatdula, Jr. said, “We are also looking at solar energy to augment the supply in the island, but we are prioritizing wind resource development because it has shown the most promise.”
“According to recent studies, wind power has a potential plant utilization rate of 33%, compared to merely 17% for solar. The capital cost per megawatt for solar and wind energy projects is similar.
Semirara Island, which is part of the Caluya archipelago south of Mindoro Island and is home to some of the best wind resources in the Philippines, was discovered to have some of the best wind resources in the country in a 2001 wind resource assessment carried out by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, a United States Department of Energy laboratory.
For utility-scale or village power uses, it was discovered that the wind corridors between Luzon and Panay, including the Semirara Islands and extending to the Cuyo Islands, had good to excellent wind power density and speed.
DPC is currently evaluating these wind resource predictions to decide the precise site and capacity of its wind project.
