🌊🐟 To preserve the threatened aquatic ecosystem along its 416-kilometer coastline, the city administration of Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, initiated the “Save the Puerto Princesa Bays” program. The campaign addresses environmental challenges caused by a growing population, with ceremonies held in Mandaragat, a coastal village housing many informal settlers.

Mayor Lucilo Bayron highlighted that the 5,500 coastal households are largely responsible for ecosystem degradation, exacerbated by untreated wastewater from 17 outfalls directly flowing into the sea. Approximately 25,000 residents in the area release household and livestock waste, contaminating water with toxic substances.

To address the issue, Mayor Bayron emphasized the importance of relocating coastal dwellers and refraining from further pollution while awaiting relocation. The city government has already acquired two land properties in Irawan and San Jose for the eventual move. The National Housing Program under the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development will assist in constructing affordable and comfortable housing units.

Barangay Irawan, spanning 21 hectares, will house around 7,680 families, and an additional two-hectare property in Barangay San Jose will accommodate 2,496 families. After the coastal area is vacated, it will be reclaimed to prevent squatting.

The coastal rejuvenation initiative will later expand to include Honda and Ulugan bays and smaller bays like Oyster, Binunsalian, and Turtle bays.

In the inauguration of the bay conservation efforts, Mayor Bayron, Vice Mayor Maria Nancy Socrates, Barangay Mandaragat captain Gerard Abad, City Council members, uniformed personnel, and volunteers led the ceremonial dispersal of mudballs. These mudballs contain beneficial bacteria that regulate ammonia concentrations and waterborne pollutants in the environment, promoting a healthier ecological balance and improving water quality.

Mayor Bayron acknowledged that this is a lengthy process, but the city is committed to restoring and preserving its coastal ecosystems. 🏞️🏠🌊
