DTI: Companies that promote recycling should be supported
Consumers are being encouraged by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to support companies that promote sustainability, such as reducing the usage of plastic goods for packaging.
Consumer Policy and Advocacy Bureau Director Melquiades Marcus Valdez II stated in a webinar on Friday, September 24, 2021, that consumers must take action and demand more sustainable options from companies and the government.
“Consumers may rethink their purchasing patterns to reduce their usage of plastic and reject superfluous plastic wherever feasible,” Valdez added. “In order to achieve sustainable consumption and production, we must decrease plastic waste.”
Stakeholders from the private sector have teamed together with the DTI to promote sustainable goods and companies to customers.
One wellness and medicine store has pledged to decrease the amount of plastic used in their packaging by 50,000 kg per year, or 2.5 million bottles.
The store said that it is the company’s goal to remove superfluous packaging, reduce recycled plastic usage to 20%, and encourage recyclable and reusable packaging.
