To fight the Covid-19 rise, QC has hired more contact tracers.

Mayor Joy Belmonte announced on Thursday that the Quezon City government has hired 350 more contact tracers to help combat the Covid-19 outbreak.

The contact tracers, who were part of the Department of the Interior and Local Government’s (DILG) contact tracing program, will be hired under the city’s Public Emergency and Services Office’s emergency employment program, according to Belmonte (PESO).

“Until December 31, last year, the additional contact tracers were already part of our contact tracing army under contract with the DILG. “However, because we still require their services, particularly during this spike,” Belmonte said in a statement, “we employed them under our emergency employment program to continue the critical duty of contact tracing, among many other obligations arising from Covid-19’s rapid spread.”

She also stated that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) had rehired 360 contact tracers for another 30 days from January 17 to February 19.

Dr. Rolando Cruz, the head of the QC Epidemiology and Disease Surveillance Unit (CESU), said the city administration currently has over 1,000 contact tracers.

According to him, community case monitoring, data collection, encoding, authenticating reported cases, assisting in vaccination, and monitoring the implementation of basic public health standards will all be done by these contact tracers.

“Since the Covid 19 outbreak, one of the primary techniques used by the municipal government to restrict the spread of cases has been contact tracing. “We were able to get the ideal ratio of individuals traced per positive patient back then, and despite the volume of cases, we are still trying to achieve the ideal proportions now,” Cruz added.

The city administration had 25,811 active cases as of 8 a.m. Thursday, accounting for 10.61 percent of the city’s Covid-19 caseload, while the death toll had risen to 1,644.
