For the holidays, Benguet guarantees plenty of ‘chopsuey’ vegetables.
For the holiday season, the local administration has ensured an abundant supply of veggies.
In a chance interview on Wednesday, Mayor Romeo Salda said, “We have been told by the traders that there will be a sufficient supply of veggies when we celebrate Christmas and New Year.”
The mayor stated that they are making plans to minimize the impact of additional automobiles moving through the town during the peak trading season.
He added that the municipal traffic committee is meeting with traders to ensure that traffic flow is controllable as more truckers come at the various trading facilities here to pick up commodities for transport to markets as far as Visayas and Mindanao.
“Every holiday season, traffic is a concern, and we want to ensure that we will minimize disruption to our people so that farmers and traders can profit from the holiday season and recoup from the pandemic’s losses.”
The La Trinidad vegetable trading post is managed by the municipal government; the Benguet Agripinoy Trading Center (BAPTC) is jointly managed by the Department of Agriculture, Benguet State University, and the provincial government; the Wangal cold chain facility is managed by the provincial government and the private facility Farmer’s Center, and the Palmaville trading facility is managed by the provincial government and the private facility Farmer’s Center.
In a separate interview, Governor Melchor Diclas stated that the provincial agriculture administration has confirmed that supplies are stable and that the commodity’s costs are reasonable to the general people.
Diclas stated that no major rains had harmed the veggies and that they are confident in their ability to meet the market’s needs.
Benguet produces 85 percent of the country’s highland vegetable needs, which are shipped to Batanes in the north and Mindanao in the south.
