The next president must continue the PRRD’s reform agenda: PDP-Laban

The Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) announced on Tuesday that it will support the presidential candidate who will carry on President Rodrigo Duterte’s legacy policies.

PDP-Laban president Alfonso Cusi stated in a statement that the party would back the candidate who would carry out Duterte’s vision of change, emphasizing that the elections should be based on issues rather than personalities.

“What the country needs right now, especially in this time of epidemic,” Cusi added, “is a presidential candidate who would continue President Duterte’s tapang at malasakit (courage and compassion) kind of leadership that the people deserve.”

Build, Build, Build, Free Education, Universal Health Care, Free Irrigation, the Barangay Development Program (BDP), and the whole-of-nation approach to ending local communist armed conflict are among Duterte’s legacy plans, according to him.

The PDP-national Laban’s executive committee declared on January 21 that it will support Sara Duterte for vice president “based on her credentials, advocacies, and vision for our nation,” but did not say who it will support for the president.

The PDP-Laban has adopted the 11-point Agenda for Continuity, which includes fights against corruption, poverty eradication, peace, and order advancement, ending the pandemic, defeating communist terrorism, sustaining economic growth, job creation, strengthening national defense and foreign relations, educational reforms, decentralization, and local government empowerment, and Charter change and federalism.

Cusi believes that enacting regulations such as conducting a pre-audit of all government transactions, the Freedom of Information Bill, and repealing the Bank Secrecy Law will help to combat corruption.

He believes that amendments to the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (Republic Act 6657), specifically on land ownership, land valuation, and land acquisition methods, should be added to help alleviate poverty, as well as the institutionalization of housing programs for homeless families across the country.

PDP-Laban intends to institutionalize the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict, expand BDP, and seek local peace engagement with the New People’s Army to combat communist terrorism, he stated.

He said decentralization and local government empowerment could be achieved by strengthening local government units’ organizational capacity through training and technical assistance, as well as allocating additional funds to assist financially-strapped municipalities with the implementation of the Mandanas-Garcia ruling, or the just share on all national taxes.

Cusi stated that the party would continue to push for a federal government, a return to a two-party system, the repeal of the 1987 Constitution’s restricted economic measures, and the application of the anti-political dynasty provision.
