Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte-Carpio, presidential and vice-presidential candidates, respectively, urged supporters to postpone planned caravans in Metro Manila on Saturday, citing concerns about a possible resurgence of Covid-19 cases due to the highly transmissible Omicron variant.

The BBM-Sara UniTeam announced in a statement that the planned unity caravan in Caloocan City on Sunday may be rescheduled so that the participants’ safety is not jeopardized.

“Everyone’s safety is of the utmost importance to us.” That is why, in accordance with the IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases) decision, we are encouraging all of our supporters to exercise restraint in their political mobilization efforts,” the statement stated.

The candidates also urged their supporters to refrain from holding any other large rallies and to follow the Alert Level 3 standards, which will be in effect in the National Capital Region from January 3 to 15.

“We are advising our fellow citizens to maintain vigilance rather than relax their guard. Now is not the time to rest on your laurels. “Let us follow the IATF’s rules to keep everyone safe,” it urged.

The organization also urged people who have not been vaccinated to get vaccinated as soon as feasible, and those who have been vaccinated to have booster or additional doses as soon as possible.

The UniTeam said, “Vaccines are the only sure way to protect oneself against hospitalization or death from the varieties that are showing up.”

After 11 days of active cases below 10,000, the figure rose to 10,418 on December 29 and 17,374 on Saturday after 3,617 new infections.

In addition to the original four cases, the Department of Health has confirmed ten new cases of the Omicron strain, three of which have already been recovered.
