Globe considers collaborating with the aviation industry to combat online fraud.
MANILA, Philippines โ Globe, a provider of digital solutions, is considering partnering with the airline industry to combat online fraud, an executive said Thursday.
“We are interested in partnering with the airline industry as they reopen,” Globe’s chief information security officer Anton Bonifacio said during a webinar.
He added that airlines could send them the blocked websites and phone numbers.
Bonifacio stated that blocking is insufficient because the perpetrators of cybercrime must be apprehended.
The company announced a data-sharing agreement with a private bank on Thursday, which will help prevent online fraud even more.
Data sharing will be secured and encrypted to ensure that critical information is accessible only to authorized individuals. Cybercriminals may be tracked more quickly as a result of this partnership, the company stated.
Bonifacio stated that he is considering partnering with the airline industry, which is frequently the target of scams.
He also expressed his hope that the next government leaders would push for caller or number authentication.
In 2021, Globe blocked approximately 1.5 billion scam and spam messages, approximately 7000 numbers associated with scammers, and approximately 2000 phishing websites and unofficial social media accounts.
Local carriers Philippine Airlines (PAL) and AirAsia Philippines issued a warning to the public late last month about online scams. Fake websites and social media pages offering promotional fares have proliferated, fooling the public into believing these are legitimate promotional sites.
“They (bogus websites) ask for personal information such as bank account information,” PAL advises, adding that bank account information is not requested when booking through any of the official booking channels.
AirAsia Philippines has also warned the public about fraudulent job offers via text messages and phony email addresses purporting to be from the carrier’s employees.
The majority of victims were from Visayas and Mindanao provinces, which have “extremely limited opportunities to verify the legitimacy of such offers,” the report stated. The carrier stated that job openings are advertised exclusively on its website and on other reputable recruitment portals.
Local airlines anticipate a surge in demand for flights as the country opens its doors to all international tourists on April 1. Domestic flight demand has also increased as restrictions in the majority of the country have been eased.
Flight frequencies will be increased between certain local destinations in response to growing demand, and budget airlines have stated that they expect to reclaim their pre-pandemic domestic capacity by the second quarter of 2022.
