Duterte will be in Davao City during Holy Week.
MANILA, Philippines โ According to Malacanang, President Rodrigo Duterte will spend Holy Week in Davao City, his hometown.
Duterte, like in past years, wants to spend Holy Week with his family, according to Acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar.
“I’d like to believe that the President will stay in Davao City as normal,” Andanar said in a virtual Palace news briefing. “‘Yung mga nakaraang taon ay doon lamang siya sa kaniyang tahanan sa Davao City (In the past years, he merely stayed at his home in Davao City).”
Because of the now-defunct extended community quarantine (ECQ), the highest degree of quarantine classification, spurred by the unexpected spike in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections the previous year, the Philippines’ commemoration of Holy Week in 2021 was limited.
In 2021, the ECQ was implemented, making it illegal for Catholics to hold religious events during Lent.
The government was able to reduce the limitations on public movement this year due to the continuous decline of Covid-19 cases.
Despite the loosened Covid-19 protocols, Andanar warned the public that during Holy Week, they must adhere to the minimal public health standards.
“Maghugas, mag-mask, mag-social distancing, as usual.” Iwasan natin kung puwedeng iwasan ang malaking crowd (Wash your hands, put on a mask, and maintain social distance, as normal). Do it if you can avoid a large crowd),” he said.
Andanar further recommended the public avoid going to enclosed public venues and instead stay outside.
“Napakalaki ng Pilipinas bansa” (There are so many places in the Philippines). There are roughly 7,600 islands in the United States. If kayo has a mapupuntahan na outside, mas maganda siguro para kayo nakukulong sa loob ng mga lugar, mga espasyo na kaunti ang ventilation,” Andanar remarked.
Metro Manila, along with 56 other cities and provinces and over 100 component cities and municipalities, is on the most lenient Alert Level 1 for the first half of April.
In places designated as Alert Level 1, the movement of people of all ages and conditions is permitted. There are, however, constraints on crowded and closed locations, as well as close contact (3Cs) conditions.
The rest of the country is still on Level 2 alert.
On Tuesday, Duterte rejected requests to further deescalate the country’s alert level status, claiming that implementing the suggested “Alert Level 0” would be impossible because there are still cases of Covid-19 throughout the country.
A total of 2,548 new Covid-19 infections were recorded in the country from March 30 to April 5.
