PH reports 1.1M foreign visitors, since its reopening in February.

Since its reopening in February of this year, the Philippines has seen 1.1 million foreign visitors, the Department of Tourism (DOT) stated late Friday.

The most recent number as of August 7 exceeded the total number of entries in 2021 when tourist-only borders were still in place, and just 163,879 foreigners entered the nation.

The DOT promised an improved “overall experience” for visitors by encouraging “digitalization” and collaborating with pertinent offices to further strengthen tourism infrastructure in order to maintain this momentum.

Prior to the pandemic, tourism had a 12.7% share of the national economy; this share dropped to 5.1 percent in 2020 and 5.2 percent in 2017.

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco stated at a summit on tourism on Thursday in Cebu that the DOT anticipates the industry would “recoup its losses and recover to pre-pandemic level in the next three years.”

According to Frasco, the DOT is creating new regional tourism circuits that will highlight, among other things, nature-based tourism, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), food and gastronomy, heritage and culture, farm and agri-tourism, health and wellness, and the arts.

As we move outside our usual portfolio and investigate multidimensional tourism, all of these tourism components will receive the same amount of promotion, attention, and support, she promised.

Frasco additionally urged the tourism industry’s stakeholders to contribute and “create a stronger bridge of collaboration” in order to advance the sector.

“Each and every one of you is essential to our hopes for rehabilitation and advancement. She told the approximately 200 tourism stakeholders and local government representatives present during the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry-organized event that “your success, our success, means more jobs for our people, a better economy, more productive workforce, and sparking our recovery, not only in our tourism industry here in Cebu but for the entire country’s economy.

In order to maximize all of our efforts and improve upon our current position on the international stage, she continued, “I ask everyone to join the efforts of the Department of Tourism and the national government in constructing a stronger bridge of collaboration.
