To return trapped passengers, a Korean Air flight is headed to Cebu.
Tuesday saw the departure for the Philippines of a different Korean Air aircraft carrying passengers who had been left behind after a Korean Air aircraft overran the runway at the Cebu airport.
According to Korean Air Lines Co., a Boeing 777 departed Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, at midday on a mission to return with the passengers and staff from the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.
According to the air carrier, the flight was due to depart Cebu at 4:20 p.m. local time and land back in Incheon at 9:40 p.m.
On Sunday, a Korean Air plane carrying 173 passengers and crew overran the runway during the third landing attempt after two weather-related failures. In the incident, no one was wounded.
Five or six passengers from the misshaped flight will board the substitute aircraft, which will fly home along with 120 other passengers who were supposed to take the same flight on Monday, according to Korean Air.
Following the incident, the local aviation authorities closed the Mactan-Cebu International Airport. From early Tuesday until 5 p.m. Wednesday, alternative flights will be permitted thanks to a partial return of airport operations.
The alternative plane’s departure from Incheon was delayed by a few hours as a result of a hiccup in the Philippine government’s approval procedure, according to the airline.
The land ministry of South Korea deployed representatives to the accident site to handle the aftermath and stated they were in discussions with local authorities about launching an investigation into the situation.
According to the ministry, there is currently no crane at the airport large enough to transfer the damaged plane, which is still 250 meters from the end of the runway.
Additionally, Korean Air employs staff in Cebu to handle the delivery of luggage and other forms of passenger care.
