Gov. Matthew Joseph Manotoc revealed plans to reopen discussions with low-cost airlines Cebu Pacific and Air Asia about establishing direct flights between Cebu and Laoag on Friday as Ilocos Norte aggressively pushes its tourism business.

Both airline companies have expressed interest in launching new routes to and from Laoag, according to Manotoc, but they are only waiting for the perfect moment.

Considering that the low-cost carrier Cebu Pacific’s hub is in Cebu, Manotoc stated, “I believe that Cebu to Laoag [flights] and vice versa are a strong route because it connects Central and Southern Philippines to Ilocos region.”

In an effort to foster additional chances for economic investment, tourism, and agriculture, as well as the passion for history and heritage, among other things, the governments of Cebu and Ilocos Norte inked a sister-province agreement in 2011.

Opening direct flights between Cebu and Laoag and vice versa is the first step to maximizing the sisterhood agreement.

Travelers from Cebu currently have to fly to either Manila or Clark in Pampanga before arriving in Ilocos Norte.

The governor stated that given the proximity of Kaohsiung, Taiwan to Laoag City and the ongoing upgrade of the Laoag International Airport to accommodate larger aircraft, he is also anticipating the potential introduction of international flights to that city.
