At Twitter HQ, Elon Musk and an ex-executive debate about the “free lunch.”

At the business’s offices, Elon Musk and a former Twitter employee got into a fight over “free lunches” when a rumor surfaced that the company would discontinue paying for the daily meal under the new CEO.

Musk claimed that despite Twitter staff not coming to the office over the past year, the cost of each lunch served was upwards of USD400 in response to a tweet of a New York Times article that stated Musk “plans to begin making employees pay for lunch โ€” which had been free โ€” at the company cafeteria.”

Following Musk’s remark, former Twitter executive Tracy Hawkins, who oversaw the company’s food program, entered the conversation and charged Musk with lying.

Attendance in the offices ranged from 20 to 50 percent, according to Hawkins, who noted that she resigned a week ago because she did not want to work under the new Twitter CEO. “For breakfast & lunch we spend USD20-USD25 a day for each person,” she said.

In response, Musk called Hawkins’ assertions “wrong” and asserted that Twitter spends USD13 million a year on catering for its headquarters.

There are more employees making breakfast than eating it, more people making breakfast than eating it, and they don’t even bother serving dinner because nobody is in the building, according to badge in data. “Peak occupancy was 25%, average occupancy below 10%,” he continued.
