Japan donates a cold chain to DOH for vaccine storage and transportation.

On Friday, the Japanese government presented the Department of Health (DOH) with gifts and ODA projects totaling PHP3.2 billion.

600 refrigerated containers, two cars with freezers, wing vans, thermal packaging systems, and webinars on how to use and maintain the equipment were all included in the contribution.

The equipment will be crucial to the agency’s ongoing strengthening of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) response and other healthcare services, according to DOH officer in charge and undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire.

She remarked during the turnover at the Lung Center of the Philippines in Quezon City, “Through this, we may further expand our programs to reach more vulnerable sectors of the public, contributing to our common objective of eradicating Covid-19 internationally.”

Nihei Daisuke, the minister of economic affairs for Japan, reiterated the significance of vaccines.

Daisuke, who spoke on behalf of Ambassador Koshikawa Kazuhiko, stated, “This collaboration with JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) on cold chain transport will ensure that vaccinations are transported across the country securely, effectively, and without losing their potency.”

According to him, the program marks another significant turning point in JICA’s more than 60 years of support for the Philippine healthcare system.

Japan’s act of solidarity, in Vergeire’s words, “really symbolizes our shared ideal of developing global communities and puts us one step closer to our shared desire to win the fight against Covid-19.”

The DOH is investigating studies on the advantages of giving the Covid-19 vaccination to vulnerable populations, in particular, a third booster dose.

Also on Friday, the DOH reported discovering 14 local instances of the “highly transmissible and immune-evasive” Omicron BQ.1 subvariant in Metro Manila, the Cordillera, and the Ilocos and Central Visayas.

As of November 24, there were 17,393 confirmed current Covid-19 infections, although as of November 17, 73.6 million Filipinos had had their full vaccination.
