On Monday, Antonio Guterres, secretary-general of the UN, urged action in three areas to stop the catastrophe of biological weapons.

In a video address to attendees of the Ninth Biological Weapons Convention Review Conference in Geneva, Guterres made the call.

According to Guterres, the first area of action is to give the accountability clauses of the agreement some real teeth in order to prevent the exploitation of technological advancements for malicious ends. Third, provide the convention with the extra funds and personnel it needs to complete this crucial work, said Guterres.

“The world generously supports international regulations against the spread of nuclear and chemical weapons. The convention’s budget should be significantly increased as we should do the same with biological weapons, he said. The time has come to block all potential routes for the creation and use of these weapons.
