No obstructions, PPA ports have a backlog.
So far in December, none of the ports managed by the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) have experienced congestion or a backlog in container traffic.
PPA spokesperson Eunice Samonte said the yard utilization rate in PPA ports is at 84.98 percent, showing no symptoms of congestion or backlogs, in a Laging Handa briefing on Thursday.
“But we’re anticipating container traffic to rise as more come, and the delivery of their cargo may suffer some little delay,” Samonte added. “Iyong mga darating pa na containers at iyong mga cargoes ay inaasahan natin na magkakaroon siguro ng mga unti-unting delay.”
However, she pointed out that domestic ports covered by the PPA are anticipated to stay free of congestion, while cargo traffic from overseas ports like Los Angeles and China may most likely encounter delays.
She declared, “We can guarantee that there won’t be any port congestion here at our ports. Dito sa atin, tinitiyak natin na wala tayong mga port congestion.”
She stated that as of now, balikbayan boxes sent domestically may arrive in about a week while those sent internationally could take one to two months to arrive.
“They should send packages early to prevent difficulty and to send their love and balikbayan boxes this Christmas swiftly,” she added. “Para iwas abala at para agad na mapadala itong pagmamahal at ang balikbayan boxes ngayong magpa-Pasko ay magpadala nang mas maaga.”
She claimed that from January to October of this year, container traffic climbed by 7.16 percent in comparison to the same time in 2021, returning PPA ports’ operating rates to those prior to the epidemic.
She also cautioned port visitors against giving money to anyone requesting “insurance” payments at PPA ports, pointing out that these requests are scams as the cost of passenger tickets already covers insurance costs.
She declared, “There is already a case under investigation based on complaints from the public. Mayroon na tayong mga kaso na under inquiry dahil ito nga iyong mga nabalitaan natin base na rin sa sumbong ng ating mga kababayan.”
