The Philippine Statistics Authority in Bicol (PSA-5) is encouraging the public to check their birth records with their local civil registry offices as the country celebrates Civil Registration Month in February.

On Thursday, Cynthia L. Perdiz, regional director of PSA-Bicol, emphasized the importance of civil registration, which includes a citizen’s rights and advantages.

She noted in a radio interview that a birth certificate can establish civil standing, which will act as an individual’s identification and filiation with his or her parents and other individuals from the moment they start school until they have a beneficiary.

She said that a person’s civil register offers them access to a variety of social benefits based on a single identification.

So your birth certificate is the only way to prove it,” Perdiz explained.

Proclamation No. 682, issued by the late President Corazon C. Aquino in 1991, mandates the commemoration of Civil Registration Month every February to raise awareness of the necessity of civil registration in people’s daily lives.
