AFP reiterates its commitment to upholding and advancing human rights

The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) participated in the National Human Rights Consciousness Week and reaffirmed its dedication to the defense and advancement of human rights.

Col. Jorry Baclor, the head of the AFP’s public affairs office, said in a statement on Tuesday that this vow was reaffirmed on Monday at Camp Aguinaldo in Quezon City during the flag-raising ceremonies.

Officers, enlistees, and civilian human resources of the AFP attended the ceremony, which was presided over by AFP Maj. Gen. Arthur Cordura, Vice Chief of Staff, served in place of Lt. Gen. Bartolome Vicente Bacarro, Chief of Staff.

In his statement, the head of the AFP urged all military members to uphold their commitment to defending and advancing Filipino citizens’ human rights.

He continued, “As soldiers in the noble profession of arms, part of our duty in defending the lives and freedom of the Filipino people and our beloved nation is to enhance our unshakable commitment to supporting the rights of our fellow citizens.

The guests recited the pledge of commitment, which serves to remind AFP personnel of their crucial responsibility in defending the rights of the people they vowed to protect, under the direction of Brig. Gen. Joel Alejandro Nacnac, director of the AFP Center for Law of Armed Conflict (AFPCLOAC).

The AFPCLOAC will also coordinate a number of initiatives to further enlighten and increase military personnel’s understanding of human rights.

“Pagtaguyod at Pagsulong ng mga Karapatang Pantao tungo sa Matatag na Pundasyon ng Kapayapaan, Katarungan, Kalikasan, Kaunlaran, at Bayanihan” is the topic of this year’s celebration, which takes place from December 4 to December 10.

The National Human Rights Awareness Week is observed in accordance with Republic Act 9201, which former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo signed into law in April 2003.

To support national unity and peacebuilding, public and private institutions are invited to participate by fostering a culture of respect for human rights.
