According to a Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) official, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. wants to expand the number of economic zones in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

According to Aleem Siddiqui Guiapal, the deputy director general of PEZA, Marcos views ecozone development as a stimulus for growth in the BARMM.

Guiapal wrote in a Viber message, “(This is) a wide land, and there are proposed ecozones from Cotabato City, Lamitan, Isabela City, and Tawi-Tawi.”

Polloc Freeport and Economic Zone (PFEZ) in Maguindanao is the only economic zone currently operating in the area.

Manufacturing, agro-industry, and halal hub are among the economically feasible industries in BARMM, according to Guiapal.

He claimed that growing the agro-industry in BARMM may aid in ensuring national food security.

On Tuesday in Cotabato City, Guiapal attended the inaugural multi-sectoral forum for the development of PFEZ.

For the past 27 years, PEZA has aided in the nation’s economic expansion.

A total of PHP4.076 trillion in investments have already been made in PEZA zones, generating 1.8 million new jobs nationwide.

With the addition of 300 information technology (IT) parks and centers, 78 manufacturing ecozones, 23 agro-industrial parks, 17 tourist ecozones, and three medical tourism zones, the number of PEZA ecozones has increased to 421.

PEZA contributed 16% of the nation’s GDP in 2021 alone, and PEZA zones accounted for 80% of all exports in the previous year.
