To increase PH capacity, DICT will begin offering cybersecurity training.
In order to support the development of the nation’s cybersecurity workforce, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) will provide both short-term courses and long-term programs on cybersecurity in 2023.
Ivan John Uy, secretary of DICT, stated during a press conference on Tuesday in Malacaang that these initiatives would include long-term programs in collaboration with educational institutions and government organizations in charge of education as well as short courses that would enable the rapid deployment of cybersecurity professionals.
“In 2023, we’ll start a few programs on that. It will be a very fascinating initiative on enhancing our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) capacity even from the school at a very young age, but I won’t disclose it just yet,” Uy remarked.
According to him, there are currently just 200 Accredited Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certified cybersecurity specialists working in the Philippines, of which only roughly 30% are based there and the remainder are employed abroad.
“What is occurring is that we have many skilled technical people, but they don’t qualify for the jobs because they lack the credentials,” he added. “Ang nangyayari kasi is marami tayong talented na technical individuals, but they don’t qualify for the employment because wala silang credentials.”
As a result, the DICT is collaborating with major IT firms like CISCO, Oracle, Intel, and Microsoft to support the provision of certification programs to Filipinos.
Some of them are three- or six-month certificates, but when they were available, we enrolled the technical individuals who were interested in them (and then what we do is we invite technical people to enroll). either free or subsidized. After that, we provide them a scholarship so they may enroll in the certification program,” he said.
He said local business process management firms, financial institutions, banks, and the rest of the business sector are looking to hire more cybersecurity experts. This is in addition to the current global demand for cybersecurity experts, with an estimated two to three million job vacancies worldwide.
And that just applies to cybersecurity. There are so many more technical sectors, he continued, adding, “Napakarami pang iba.”
He stated that the DICT is forming alliances with the Department of Education (DepEd), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), and state universities and colleges to develop more courses in the field in order to address the long-term need for cybersecurity experts.
The National Cybersecurity Talent Workforce Assessment of the Philippines, published by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) early in December, outlined the existing shortage of qualified, experienced cybersecurity workers in the nation.
The Better Access and Connectivity (BEACON) Activity of USAID hired IBM Consulting Services to conduct research that suggested numerous ways to close the labor gap.
