DOTr plans to upgrade Borongan Airport

Following the recent inauguration of the Cebu-Borongan inaugural flight of Philippine Airlines, the Department of Transportation (DOTr) has agreed to carry out rehabilitation works for the Borongan Airport in Eastern Samar province (PAL).

House Minority Floor Leader Marcelino Libanan claimed that he had preliminary discussions over the funding of many airport projects with DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista.

“We just built the bridge in the sky that we need right now. In a Wednesday interview, Libanan stated that the bridge needed to be strengthened and fortified.

“To accomplish that, the facility needs to be upgraded. Secretary Bautista concurred that monies for our runway will be included in the general appropriations for the following year, resulting in a two-kilometer runway instead of the current 1.2 kilometers, according to Eastern Samar native Libanan.

The community airport might accommodate larger aircraft by extending the runway’s length.

The installation of a permanent perimeter fence, according to Libanan, is another modification that must be made.

In order to provide travelers with a more comfortable waiting environment while they awaited their flights, he would also advocate for the establishment of a larger terminal. The current departure area can only accommodate 60 people at a time.

The PAL turboprop aircraft being used for the Cebu-Borongan flight can accommodate 86 passengers.

Libanan continued, “We also need to have a hangar that the plane can utilize in an emergency.”

To enable nighttime flights, the airport’s navigational equipment must also be upgraded.

Beginning on Mondays and Fridays, PAL has been operating a twice-weekly flight between Cebu and Borongan. Through Cebu, the airline connects passengers from Metro Manila to the city.

The 8:55 a.m. flight at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport departs Metro Manila for Borongan and arrives at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport at 10:20 a.m.

Passengers will next travel from Cebu to Borongan aboard a turboprop plane, which will depart at 11 a.m. and arrive at noon.

Passengers will transfer to an airbus plane that will depart Cebu at 3:10 p.m. and land in Manila at 4:50 p.m. after the plane arrives in Cebu at 12:30 p.m.
