
DOH records 211 injuries from pyrotechnics in the first two days of 2023.
74 more fireworks-related injuries were recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) on Monday, bringing the total for January 1 and 2 to 211.
109 of the total injuries happened on the streets.
Sixty people required eye surgery, while 11 bomb injuries necessitated amputations.
With 102 cases, the National Capital Region had the most.
Additionally, there were 25 instances recorded from Western Visayas, 20 from Central Luzon, 13 from Ilocos, 11 from Calabarzon, and 25 from Bicol.
According to the most recent case bulletin, the number is 16 percent more than the 182 cases reported during the same period last year.
According to the DOH, “the 182 cases were 30% fewer compared to the five-year average of 300 cases during the same period.”
The most frequent cause of injury was “kwitis,” a legal skyrocket type of firecracker, which accounted for 45 incidents.
Meanwhile, “boga” (improvised cannon) injuries totaled 27, 5-star triangle firecracker injuries totaled 19, and fountain fireworks injuries totaled 12.
There were no documented deaths associated with fireworks or firecrackers, either.
From December 21, 2022 to January 1, Pangasinan province reported 38 firework-related injuries.
Col. Jeff Fanged, head of the Pangasinan Police Provincial Office, stated in an interview on Monday that the data showed burns and other minor wounds brought on, among other things, by boga, kwitis, and sparklers.
Fanged reported that they also seized 1,945 different types of illicit fireworks from dealers.
He claimed that Pangasinan’s New Year celebrations were generally calm.
