Off-site registration is held by Comelec for Baguio students and PDLs.

In order to accelerate the registration of new voters for the upcoming barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections, the Commission on Elections (Comelec)-Baguio conducted off-site voter registration activities on Monday at the Baguio City National High School (BCNHS) and Baguio City Jail (BCJ).

The sectoral off-site registration program, according to Baguio election officer lawyer John Paul Martin, strives to ensure that “all those who wish to vote can be registered.”

According to him, “some people don’t vote because they aren’t registered because they don’t have time to go to the Comelec office because their work or school schedules conflict with the registration hours.”

Therefore, Martin remarked, “for the convenience of the public, we move the registration to where the voters are.”

More than 300 BCNHS pupils had registered as of Monday at 3 p.m., and another 700 were anticipated before the office closed.

With the observation that few people approach their office to be registered despite their proximity to the school, the Comelec official stated that they offered to the school’s principal to hold a registration.

The largest public high school in the area is BCNHS, which is within 500 meters from both the Comelec office and the SM Mall, where registration is also available on-site.

He stated that they hoped to expand registration to the other schools in order to enroll students in grades 11 and 12 who might be eligible to vote or run for office.

90 PDLs (persons deprived of liberty), both male and female, had already registered at the city jail by noon.

Martin stated that the vulnerable groupsโ€”PDL, senior citizens, people with disabilities (PWDs), and studentsโ€”are the focus of off-site registration efforts throughout the entire week.

Senior citizens will be given preference on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, he said, while PWDs will be given priority on Wednesday at the mall site registration in SM-Baguio.

Martin stated that they anticipate at least 5,000 people to register as a result of off-site registration initiatives.
