CDO eyes grew sterner Children’s measles vaccine drive, Covid

According to a local official, more youngsters are being targeted for vaccination against the measles and coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19).

The Department of Health in Northern Mindanao Region (DOH-10) has instructed the City Health Office (CHO) to target 70 percent full vaccination of children aged five to eleven years old in the Covid-19 drive, according to Dr. Inah Grace Chiu, the city’s medical director of the National Immunization Program.

In the same campaign, the DOH-10 also mandated that 12 to 17-year-olds receive a first booster dose that is fully covered.

In a news conference held here, Chiu stated that this city has the second-lowest rate of vaccines for children aged five to eleven in the entire region, at only 52.53 percent.

Chiu reported that the CHO had administered vaccinations to a total of 92,977 people under the recalculated target population of 526,613 on July 1, 2022.

Of the total, vaccinations were given to 71,432 kids between the ages of five and eleven.

However, only 37,523 of the 71,432 kids in that age range received both doses of the recommended vaccine.

Despite this, the city has immunized 1.4 million people since the first vaccination efforts began in 2021.

Philippine Statistics Authority estimates that there are 728,402 people living in the city, but CHO has expanded its immunization program to include neighboring towns and provinces.

The CHO is simultaneously enforcing its aggressive measles immunization campaign in the barangays.

According to Chiu, the Covid-19 epidemic led to a poor participation rate for children between the ages of 9 and 24 months in the measles vaccination campaign.

Individuals between the ages of 14 and 45 can also receive booster doses of the measles vaccine, she continued.

Due to poor vaccination rates, CHO director Dr. Rachel Dilla voiced concern that the city would see a measles epidemic.

She advised parents to take their kids to their local barangay health clinics for anti-measles doses because there is a potential that those who are not immunized would die.
