Deputy Speaker and Las Pinas Representative Camille Villar have introduced a bill that would require a number of substantial benefits for every working journalist in order to further protect the welfare of media employees.

Villar claimed there was a need to protect journalists’ welfare as they covered news in his House Bill No. 6543.

Villar stated in a statement that “risk events like typhoons, storms, floods, riots, war, and conflicts, to name a few, are faced by journalists during essential tasks in order to relay the news to the public.”

Some front-line journalists “take field assignments bringing only their zeal sans insurance or hazard compensation even though they risk their lives for the sake of journalism,” the lady solon added.

All practicing journalists in the Philippines who are employed by media organizations are entitled to insurance, tax-exempt hazard pay, and other incentives under the terms of HB 6543, which was filed on December 6 of last year.

Specifically, when they are covering war zones, conflict-ridden regions, and disaster-affected areas, freelance journalists are required to have special coverage under the Social Security System and the Government Service Insurance System.

Additionally, journalists working in the field or on the front lines are eligible for disability payments of up to PHP300,000 for entire or partial disability, PHP300,000 in death benefits, and PHP200,000 in reimbursement for medical expenses incurred while performing their duties.

“Journalists need to be treated with respect, both for the kind of work they undertake and for the perks that have been long overdue. While some journalists may not make respectable income, it is important for them to take use of these benefits because they have dependent families, according to Villar.
