BOC stops P153 million worth of onions being smuggled into Manila port
At the Manila International Container Port, customs officials found PHP153 million worth of fresh red and white onions that had been smuggled in (MICP).
On Thursday, the Bureau of Customs (BOC) said that the smuggled goods were found when people from the Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service (CIIS)-MICP carefully checked the containers on Tuesday.
Five containers were used to carry the red onions, and two containers were used to carry the white onions. Each container was worth an estimated PHP21.9 million.
All of the packages were sent to Seaster Consumer Goods Trading, and at first, they were said to contain fishballs.
Alvin Enciso, the head of CIIS-MICP, said that a Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) should be issued because the consignee is likely to be charged with a crime.
The boxes came from China on November 16, 2022. On November 18, 2022, it was asked that all containers be checked.
Customs Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz said that the BOC is in control of the situation and that the current intensified operation against agricultural smuggling is in line with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order.
“We know how hard it is for our neighbors because of how much things cost, especially fresh onions. We are taking more steps to make sure that these people are brought to justice and that illegally sourced and imported goods, which could hurt the agricultural sector even more, are taken off the market.
Also, CIIS director Jeoffrey Tacio said that the containers can be checked on the spot because they know they contain agricultural products and items that were not declared or were listed incorrectly.
“Once again, our team was only able to work well because they worked together and coordinated with different government agencies. He said, “This is what partnership can do: stop these players from bringing millions of dollars worth of illegal goods into our markets.”
