In 2021, South Asia and Africa will have the highest rates of child mortality.

According to the most recent UN study, Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia continued to have the worst rates of child mortality in 2021, losing millions of children to a lack of medical facilities in each region.

The UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME) research states that 2.1 million children and youth aged 5 to 24 will die in 2021, adding to the predicted five million children who died before turning five.

According to the study published on the UNICEF website on Tuesday, “Children continue to suffer wildly differing chances of survival depending on where they are born, with sub-Saharan Africa and Southern Asia bearing the worst burden.”

Despite having only 29% of the world’s live births, sub-Saharan Africa was responsible for 56% of all under-five fatalities in 2021, and Southern Asia for 26% of them, according to the study.

With the two regions accounting for 77% of the 1.9 million stillbirths, mothers in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa felt the anguish and grief of losing their infants owing to a lack of healthcare services.

Juan Pablo Uribe, the director of the Global Financing Facility for Women, Children, and Adolescents and the global director for health, nutrition, and the population at the World Bank, stated that “behind these numbers are millions of children and families who are denied their basic rights to health” (GFF).

One of the best investments that nations and development partners can make, according to Uribe, is primary healthcare. To continue funding this important sector, we need political will and leadership.

The majority of stillbirths that occur during childbirth, or 40% of all stillbirths, might have been prevented if women had access to high-quality healthcare, the report claims.

Premature birth and difficulties during labor are the main causes of death for these youngest babies, it stated.

According to the report, children born in sub-Saharan Africa have the highest risk of dying as children in the world – 15 times higher than the risk for children in Europe and North America.

59 million children and youth will die before 2030, and roughly 16 million newborns will die in stillbirth, the UN also warned nations that have not yet reached the Sustainable Development Goals target for under-five mortality.

“Too many parents experience the anguish of losing their children every day, sometimes even before they take their first breath,” said Vidhya Ganesh, Director of UNICEF’s Division of Data Analytics, Planning, and Monitoring.

Such a pervasive, avoidable catastrophe shouldn’t ever be thought of as inevitable. Stronger political will and focused investment in ensuring equitable access to primary healthcare for every mother and child are necessary for progress, he continued.

The research does, however, highlight some positive developments, such as a worldwide decline in death rates since 2000 across all age groups.

“Since the turn of the century, the mortality rate for children under the age of five has declined by 50%, that of older children and teens by 36%, and that of stillbirths by 35%. In order to help women, children, and young people, primary health systems need to be strengthened further “It read.
