Mt. Bulusan, according to Phivolcs, is cooling off

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) announced on Monday that after recording over 100 seismic events on June 12, Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon has progressively calmed down, with 27 earthquakes registered on June 14 and just four in the previous 24-hour monitoring period.

These seismic variations, according to Phivolcs, are due to “shallow hydrothermal activity after rainfall recharge into Bulusan’s hydrothermal system.”

“But we are keeping a careful watch on Bulusan,” April Dominguiano, resident volcanologist at the Cavid-an monitoring station in Sorsogon City, said in an interview on Monday. At the moment, all of its operations are still classified as “alert level 1.”

Ground deformation data from continuous Global Positioning System (GPS) readings, according to Phivolcs, show short-term inflation or bulging of Bulusan’s surface from May 2021.

“Sustained inflation has been seen in the upper slope tilt data from March 6, 2021,” Phivolcs said.

The four-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) around the volcano remains closed to the public.

“People living within valleys and along river or stream channels, particularly on the southeast, southwest, and northwest sectors of the edifice should be vigilant against sediment-laden stream flows and lahars in the event of heavy and prolonged rainfall should a phreatic eruption occur,” Dominguiano warned.
