What to anticipate in 2023 at Davos

Leading personalities in global politics and industry will gather at the 53rd World Economic Forum (WEF) annual conference this week in Davos-Klosters, Switzerland, with the theme “Cooperation in a Fragmented World.”

More than 2,700 leaders, including 50 heads of state or government, will attend the gathering, which begins on Monday, as numerous crises widen rifts and splinter the geopolitical landscape.

More than 370 public personalities from governments and international organizations, more than 1,500 corporate leaders, and 90 innovators will attend Davos this year, marking the biggest business participation ever.

56 finance ministers, 19 heads of central banks, 30 trade ministers, and 35 foreign ministers will also be present at the summit.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, European Commission Presidents Ursula von der Leyen and Roberta Metsola, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin, Polish President Aleksandar Vucic, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev are among prominent political figures attending the summit.

The leaders of South Africa and South Korea will also attend the Swiss ski resort, in addition to Philippine President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.

John Kerry, the US climate envoy, Jens Stoltenberg, Christine Lagarde, Antonio Guterres, the UN secretary general, Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the IMF, and Fatih Birol, the executive director of the International Energy Agency, a Turkish economist and energy expert, will all be present.

The CEO of the American international financial firm BlackRock, Laurence Fink, will also be present.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, stated that his country is getting ready to attend Davos and that he has spoken with Fink about the endeavor to rebuild when the ongoing conflict, which will soon approach its 12th month, is done.

Zelenskyy, who had a video conversation with Fink in September, claimed in a speech to the country that “specialists of this organization are already helping Ukraine to establish the money for the reconstruction of our state.”

Protests against Davos and climate change are anticipated.

At Davos, hundreds of demonstrators are scheduled to demonstrate against multinational corporations over escalating environmental damage caused by human activity.

Additionally, they have been criticizing the Davos elite, claiming that they are hypocritical and elitist because, for example, they fly in luxury jets to discuss climate change.

Over 1,000 planes entered and exited the airports servicing Davos during the summit last year, according to reports, causing private jet emissions to double.

Authorities normally place rigorous restrictions on where and how many people can attend demonstrations, usually allowing for crowds of up to 500.

However, protesters can try to obstruct traffic on the key A28 highway that runs through Davos.

Swiss authorities have implemented rigorous security measures around Davos, including the deployment of thousands of security personnel, possible checkpoints on entry routes, and traffic restrictions on specific roads in the town center.

There will probably be more protests in Davos throughout the conference.

Where is the global economy headed?

The main topic of discussion at the Davos summit will be “Where is globalization going? “, since the Covid-19 tragedy and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war have led some to believe that the current era of globalization is about to come to an end.

In light of this, it appears that the conference will evaluate systemic disturbances and continue to promote globalization.

It has historically focused on the failings of globalization, but in light of Covid-19’s persisting effects, climate change, and the current war, its impact has been steadily declining.
