Fishers are urged by BFAR to ensure aquaculture regulation.
On Wednesday, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) asked fishermen to follow strict aquaculture legislation.
Following reports of a fish kill in South Cotabato’s Lake Sebu, the BFAR released the statement.
Chief of the BFAR Information and Fisherfolk Coordination Unit Nazario Briguera stated during the Laging Handa public briefing that the cost of loss has surpassed PHP12 million.
“As of this now, 23% of the Lake Sebu area is being used for lake farming. And it cannot be made to break the law. ‘Yung patuloy na pagpapaunawa tungkol sa good aquaculture methods’ (As of right now, about 23 percent of Lake Sebu is being used for lake farming.) is where the intervention would be made. The lake won’t benefit from it. Because of this, the government is stepping in to inform [fishers] about good aquaculture methods, he said.
The BFAR observed that a number of variables, such as a drop in dissolved oxygen levels, a change in the climate, or even an increase in pollutants, may have an impact on fish kill.
However, Briguera noted that effective regulation of fish cages is important, particularly given that just 10% of the lake is suitable for aquaculture.
harmful red tide
The BFAR, on the other hand, said that red tide actions only comprise monitoring for public warning.
Seven coastal regions have so far tested positive for hazardous red tide or paralytic shellfish poison.
The phrase “not safe for human consumption” refers to all varieties of shellfish from certain coastal locations.
It is a natural occurrence. It is the isang likas that is nangyayari to the aforementioned karagatan. And the public is being closely watched and monitored as a result of the red tide, which is the main thing that’s keeping us from winning. And it doesn’t normally get reported to authorities or to the general public. And what we can do is keep an eye out for red tide and inform the people right away. Therefore, there won’t be any harm or public poisoning as a result),” Briguera added.
Coastal waters at Milagros, Masbate; Panay, President Roxas, and Pilar, Capiz; Dauis and Tagbilaran City, Bohol; Dumanquillas Bay, Zamboanga del Sur; and Lianga Bay, Surigao del Sur are among the locations where red tide has been detected.
More fisheries initiatives
The BFAR also expressed gratitude to lawmakers for approving their PHP6.9 billion annual budget.
“Thank you for your support in congress and the senate on the budget that is being discussed. We appreciate the support of the Senate and the House of Representatives in passing this budget, and it is at it is ilalaan ng ahensya para sa iba’t ibang programa. According to Briguera, the agency will distribute this among its several programs.
Among the programs, according to him, are ones for fisheries development, fisheries regulation and law enforcement, fisheries extension, and fisheries policy.
In addition to these, Briguera promised that as part of the FB Pagbabago program, fishermen will continue to get boats to help them increase their catch.
846 fiberglass boats had been distributed to 839 people and 68 groups as of December 31 of the previous year.
