Approximately 250 Higaunon farmers and 25 indigenous people are beginning to benefit from the Bukidnon citronella processing facility, a Department of Science and Technology (DOST) official stated on Monday.

The facility was built in November 2022 and started to run at full capacity this month, according to Ritchie Mae Guno, the provincial chairman of DOST in Bukidnon.

“Citronella grasses from the farmers will be sold to AFAI (Agtimaloy Farmers Association Inc.) Additionally, some of the farmers would be employed to produce citronella “In an interview, Guno stated to the Philippine News Agency.

Members of the organization will receive commissions from sales of citronella goods, according to Guno.

According to her, the factory turns citronella grass into citronella oil, which is then packaged in 30 ml, 50 ml, and 1-liter bottles.

Human Nature, a social enterprise company that sells products for beauty and personal care, is buying these oils.

The collective income of the farmers might reach PHP583,000 annually. These farmers reside in Brgy. San Luis, Sitio Impahanog, Malitbog, Buidnon.

In the meantime, Guno claimed that the facility’s construction cost approximately PHP100,000.

In order to make the project viable and to assist the members, Guno added that the beneficiaries can use the facility for free and that all revenue will be provided directly to the association.

Malitbog town is a collaborator in the endeavor.

The facility has a hydro steam distillation unit for the extraction of citronella oil from grasses using firewood.

The facility will be run and managed by the AFAI beginning this year, according to DOST Secretary Renato Solidum Jr.

The 10-hectare citronella plantation is owned and operated by the farmers.

To completely empower the indigenous people group, DOST’s engagement also covered product creation, business and organizational management, and market matching prospects.
