Smuggled onions worth PHP18.6 million were found in a ship in Zamboanga City by the Bureau of Customs (BOC) – Port of Zamboanga (POZ) last week.

The port said in a statement on Tuesday that on January 25, during a maritime patrol operation in Barangay Ayala, Zamboanga City, it had intercepted 5,611 mesh bags of imported red onions with an estimated market value of PHP8.5 million and 2,249 mesh bags of imported white onions valued at PHP10.1 million.

The onions, which are supposedly from Taganak in the Tawi-Tawi province, are loaded into a ship with the marking “MV Princess Nurdisza” and are headed for Barangay Baliwasan.

It also stated that the crew violated Section 1401 of Republic Act (R.A.) 10863, also known as the “Customs Modernization and Tariff Act of 2016,” in relation to Republic Act 10845, also known as the “Anti-Agricultural Smuggling Act of 2016,” because they failed to provide a sanitary and phytosanitary import clearance from the Department of Agriculture (DA)-Bureau of Plant Industry for the goods.

The Department of Agriculture’s Research Center in Barangay Talisayan received the onions for storage.

Following two separate operations on January 22 and 23, Port of Zamboanga District Collector Segundo Sigmundfreud Barte Jr. said that the most recent arrest marks the third successful recovery of imported onions.

The aggressive campaign directed by Commissioner Yogi Filemon Ruiz to implement stricter border control measures through ongoing maritime patrol operations in western Mindanao, in accordance with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s order to stop agricultural smuggling in the country, was credited with the successful operations.
