Senator: PH-Japan relations are essential for development and security.

Senator Christopher Lawrence Go and Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri has expressed optimism that the strong relationship between the Philippines and Japan will continue to improve security ties and expand Philippine economic possibilities.
Go said he anticipates further agreements between the two nations that will bring investments and job opportunities to the Philippines with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s five-day visit to Japan.
Go stated in a statement released on Friday, “Essential po sa ngayon ang ekonomiya at trabaho, and I’m sure marami pong madadala na investment po ang ating Pangulong Marcos para po makapagbigay ng trabaho sa ating mahihirap na kababayan (What is important now is the economy and employment, and I’
The senator also expressed gratitude to Japan for all the help given to the nation over the years.
“I’m certain that Japan has been quite supportive of our efforts under the current administration. I’m convinced that Japan has been highly supportive of our country, even during the past administrations, in all of our current projects. They started and supported a number of our projects here,” Go said.
Zubiri is promoting a Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with Japan in the meantime.
Strategically, it makes sense. We stand to gain from closer security coordination with our friends given the continuous territorial disputes over our waters, said Zubiri in a previous statement.
“Japan is already providing essential assistance to our Coast Guard, not just with ships and equipment but also with other chances for capacity-building like training. The VFA will further solidify our alliance, he continued.
While peaceful diplomacy continues to be the nation’s top strategy for resolving disputes, he claimed that the VFA will enable our Coast Guard and Armed Forces to be more effective in times of hostilities.
In addition to being essential for bolstering our security and defense, the VFA will also be invaluable to us during natural catastrophes and tragedies, according to Zubiri.
