End of May is expected for total power restoration in Southern Leyte.

TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – By the end of May, all villages in the province of Southern Leyte that were ravaged by Typhoon Odette last December should have power restored.

In the previous four months of restoration activities, Southern Leyte Electric Cooperative (Soleco) general manager Jonathan Empeno noted that a lack of manpower and materials has hampered efforts to restore power.

“By the end of May, we want to have energized all 500 villages.” “Only approximately 100 linemen from our electric cooperative, our contractors, and a team from South Cotabato are trying to restore electricity,” Empeno told the Philippine News Agency (PNA) in a phone interview.

After more than four months of power outages caused by “Odette,” only 386 out of 500 villages in Southern Leyte had regained power.

Soleco said that out of the 105,787 affected power consumers, only 79,362 homes and businesses had been electrified as of April 27.

This indicates that the power outage is still affecting 26,425 homes.

“As of this writing, 76.74 percent of communities in Soleco’s coverage region are already partially powered. “75.02 percent of consumers are already energized,” Empeno stated.

Only the municipalities of Padre Burgos, Libagon, Pintuyan, San Juan, and Silago, which are part of Soleco’s franchise region, have had full power restoration as of this week.

Maasin City, Macrohon, Tomas Oppus, Bontoc, Sogod, Liloan, San Ricardo, Saint Bernard, San Francisco, Hinunangan, Malitbog, Anahawan, Hinundayan, and Limasawa towns have partially energized villages.

In Southern Leyte, electric cooperatives have already spent almost PHP300 million to restore power.

The sum includes a PHP100 million loan from the National Electrification Administration to Soleco, as well as a PHP39 million contingency fund for repair operations.

When Typhoon Odette hit areas of Visayas and Mindanao on Dec. 16, 2021, it toppled electric poles and wrecked other distribution facilities.

Damage to Soleco facilities is estimated to cost PHP800 million in total.
