In the first two months of 2023, the crime rate in PH falls by 19.5%.

Despite the recent wave of attacks on local officials, the country’s crime rate decreased by 19.49 percent from January to February 25 of this year compared to the same time in 2022.

Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., the head of the Philippine National Police (PNP), stated on Monday that index crime, which was 6,141 from January to February 25 in 2022 down to 4,944 for the same time this year, is continuing to drop.

Every week, I had been reporting that the crime environment in the neighborhood where I lived was “pababa” (as I said the crime environment in our country is going down). The PNP is currently working on the case to identify the perpetrators and bring them to jail, which is sad given the shooting occurrences that have occurred against our elected local leaders, Azurin told reporters in Camp Crame.

Azurin argued that these are isolated incidents, so the recent wave of assaults on local government officials is not yet causing for panic.

“I would say that it’s not worrying since we were able to decide our own scenario and rationale for why to make it a pinatay for the relevant group of folks, so to speak” (which is not yet alarming because the situations are different, the reasons why these people were killed are different). It’s either political, personal, or corporate rivalry, or another reason why these deaths are occurring, as I indicated, he continued.

Three local government officials have been the targets of a string of attacks in less than a week: Maguindanao del Sur mayor Ohto Montawal on February 22, Lanao del Sur vice mayor Rommel Alameda on February 19, and Lanao del Sur governor Mamintal Alonto Adiong Jr. on February 17. Alameda was one of the three who perished.

According to Azurin, the Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) Alameda has amassed significant pieces of evidence and encouraging leads as of February 26.

“ACG is helping by improving the film to help identify the suspects while we are on the double at SITG Montawal doing backtracking of CCTV footages,” Azurin said.

According to Azurin, there are already leads for these cases, particularly for identifying the culprits.

“We are hopeful that the three SITGs would resolve their individual cases at the earliest opportunity and apprehend the suspects,” he continued.

As a result of these instances, Azurin gave the order to all 17 police regional office heads to analyze the security risks to local authorities within their spheres of responsibility.

According to Azurin, no politician has yet spoken out about a potential threat to their lives.

“We are hoping that this threat assessment will be accelerated so that we will know whether to provide additional security to them or status quo on the present security that is detailed to them,” Azurin said. “We are hoping that this threat assessment will be accelerated so that we will know whether to provide additional security to them or status quo on the present security that is detailed to them.”

According to PNP regulations, elected politicians are limited to having two PNP-Police Security and Protection Group security personnel.

Azurin claimed that even if authorities leave their areas of authority, they can still be protected by the neighborhood police.

Azurin said Monday afternoon that he will go to the emergency meeting with House Speaker Martin Romualdez, who had convened representatives from the PNP and the Department of Interior and Local Government.

Also, Azurin has instructed police field units to step up their efforts to combat organized crime and organizations that provide guns for hire.
