The first regional data center in the Philippines to consider expansion
Before the first center of a joint venture firm, Narra 1, opens on Tuesday, officials of the nation’s largest carrier-neutral and regional data center are already researching options for a second location.
Jonathan Chou, chief product officer at Digital Edge, stated at a conference on Monday that they hope to offer a solution that would compete with data centers located abroad, such as those in Singapore, Hong Kong, and the US.
Chou claimed that they view regional players rather than local rivals as their rivals and as a result, “truly work hard” to make sure their services satisfy the expectations of their customers.
Through its 10-megawatt (MW) center at the Laguna Technopark in Binan, the USD100 joint venture company between regional player Digital Edge (Singapore) Holdings Pte. Ltd. and local technology and real estate company Threadborne Group aims to offer top-notch data center services to clients like Amazon.
The center provides 2,200 cabinets as a colocation facility for businesses in the technology sector.
According to Chou, the company wants to attain a peak power usage effectiveness (PUE) of 1.3 or less, be a carbon-neutral data center by 2030, and get at least half of its energy from renewable sources by 2025.
“We are adamant about the scope and potential of the Philippine market. So long as there is growth, we will keep investing, he said.
Chou stated that although they still don’t have any precise information about the second location, he did say that “it will be bigger” than their first branch and that it would be ready in five years.
As the nation’s first regional data center, Digital Edge Philippines Counter Manager Victor Barrios stated that the company aims to be the “shining gold standard” for the sector.
Since more businesses and the government use technology to manage their daily operations, particularly in the wake of the pandemic, Barrios claimed that the digital transformation of the nation is crucial to their operations.
He named several factors that contribute to their optimism, including the Philippines’ young population, which is ranked second in South East Asia and third in the world for daily internet usage, the push for digitalization among businesses, government support for digital infrastructure initiatives, and projections for a 27-percent increase in the data center market over the next five years.
We believe that we are in a good position to benefit from that (push for digitization),” he continued.
