Iloilo boat races will feature more than forty paraws.
The 50th Iloilo Paraw Regatta Festival’s main sailing competition, which is planned for March 19, will include about 40 paraws, or sailboats with outriggers.
As of Monday afternoon, over 30 sailboats had already filed their complete criteria, according to Joyce Clavecillas, executive director of the Iloilo Festivals Foundation Inc., which oversees the event. Those who have not yet done so had until Tuesday afternoon to do so.
“We’re only waiting on the further conditions from the people who signed our forms. For the sailing event this year, I’m hoping we can get at least 50 boats,” she remarked in an interview.
The entries will then be divided into three groups based on the overall length for Category A and the waterline length for Categories B and C.
Category A is for boats over 25 feet in length, Category B is for boats with a waterline between 16.1 and 22 feet, and Category C is for boats with a waterline over 22 feet.
All three categories will have entries, she continued.
The entries will travel from the Arevalo district to Guimaras province and back, nearly following the 30-kilometer Iloilo Strait itinerary.
According to Clavecillas, the grand champions for Categories A, B, and C will receive, respectively, PHP40,000, PHP64, 000, and PHP96,000 (all nett of tax).
The second placers will take home, PHP24,000; PHP40,000; and PHP64,000 for the three categories while third placers will receive PHP16,000, PHP24,000; and PHP 40,000.
The week-long celebration began on March 12 and, according to the executive director, they are currently 80 to 90 percent prepared with all working groups involved. Also, some events have already begun.
Also, the local administration has paid ten painters to create a mural for the Paraw Regatta Festival on a blank wall in the Lapuz neighbourhood.
In order to make it to the main event on Sunday, she added, they are only hoping for nice weather.
